The most expensive mistake on a drywall job isn't underbidding — it's running out of material mid-afternoon. Every extra store run costs you 45 minutes to an hour that nobody pays for, and if the store is closed, it costs you a day. The materials takeoff gets done once, before you quote, on paper. Here it is start to finish, using a real wall as the example.
Step 1: measure the area, don't eyeball it
Wall area is length times height. A wall 12 feet long and 8 feet tall is 96 square feet per side. If it's finished on both faces — standard for an interior partition — you're hanging 192 square feet of board.
What about the door? A 32-inch door opening is roughly 18 square feet. Don't subtract it. Small openings (regular doors and windows) stay in the count: the cutout almost never gets reused anywhere else, and that "extra" material is exactly the cushion that saves you when a sheet cracks at a corner. Only deduct big openings — a run of glass, a double patio door.
Step 2: the sheets
A standard 4×8 sheet is 32 square feet. The math:
- 192 ÷ 32 = 6 sheets exactly
- Plus 10% waste for cuts and breaks = 6.6 → 7 sheets
That 10% isn't pessimism, it's physics: cuts around the door frame, the sheet that arrives with a crushed edge, the corner that snaps while you're screwing it off. On ceilings or rooms with lots of angles, bump waste to 15%.
Step 3: the framing
For metal framing with studs at 16 inches on center (the interior standard):
- Studs: wall length in inches ÷ 16, plus one to close the run. A 12-foot wall is 144 inches: 144 ÷ 16 = 9, plus 1 = 10 studs at 8 feet. If the wall takes a door, the two frame studs are already inside that count, but add pieces for the header and king studs if the plan calls for them.
- Track: runs top and bottom, so it's wall length times two: 12 × 2 = 24 linear feet.
Step 4: the small stuff, which is what gets forgotten
- Screws: the field rule is about one screw per square foot — studs at 16" and a screw every 12" in the field. For 192 square feet that's around 200 screws; a 1-pound box of 1-1/4" fine thread has plenty for this job.
- Tape: figure 37 feet of tape per 100 square feet of board. For 192 square feet that's ~72 feet; a 250 ft roll covers it and the rest goes to the next job.
- Mud (joint compound): the reference is roughly one pound of compound per 20 square feet across all three coats. For 192 square feet that's about 10 pounds: a 1-gallon pail (~14 lb) covers it with margin. If you hang drywall regularly, the 4.5-gallon bucket is cheaper per pound and keeps fine with the lid on tight.
Step 5: price it the day you quote
Reference prices around Miami in mid-2026 — they move by store and by week, so check them the day you build the estimate, not from memory:

With the list above, materials for the 12×8 wall land between $160 and $210. That spread is normal — which is why you quote with the day's price and the 10% waste already baked in, not with what you remember paying last time.
